This week our science table will be all about snow and ice! During our winter inquiry, many questions have come up about winter weather and snow. Monday, we observed what happens when we spray water on snow. We also left the bin all day to see what would happen. Take a look!

Graphing in Kindergarten
Last week, Mrs. Logan introduced us to graphing. We did a class poll on "Which is your favourite bear." The kinders had to choose from a panda, polar, grizzley, and a black bear. When we were done we put all the data together and made a graph. During learning centres, we went around gathering new data (favourite colours) and made our own graphs. Take a look!
Our Polar Bear Habitat...
We finally finished our polar bear habitat. We have polar bears, seals, a walrus and lots of "snowballs" and "ice". We completed it on friday by adding our papier mache igloos. Take a look!

Polar Bear Science
This week we have been learning about how polar bears adapt to live in the arctic. We learned that polar bears have a thick layer of fat called blubber. This protects them from the harsh, icy waters. To show this to the kinders we made bowls or icy water. The kinders placed thier 2 index fingers into the bowls and had to tell us which on was colder. We left one finger bare and on the other we put a layer of fat (Crisco). We discovered that the finger with the fat stayed warmer than our bare fingers. It was a great way to make the connection with polar bears and how they stay warm! See some the pictures below :)

Polar Bears!!
Today, we practiced our writing by making polar bear books. We looked through books to find facts we could write on our special polar bear paper and wrote our special polar bear words. When the books were done we read them to our friends at circle.
Reminders...
Pizza and lunch lady forms went home on Monday. If interested, please return them as soon as you can. Lunch lady is due Thursday, January 30th and pizza forms are due on Friday, January 31st.
Thanks!

Winter Inquiry
Our winter inquiry has us talking about animal habitats and hibernation. We have been really excited about polar bears and bears. We've been reading books and watching video clips to learn more and more about them everyday. Yesterday, we set up a bear habitat in our sand bin. We also worked on papier mache igloos for our polar bear habitat. See below for some picutres...

Ice Science
Some of our kinders were very curious about how ice is made, so we filled up balloons with water and food colouring , and put them in the freezer. After two days they were frozen solid and ready for science. We decided to watch them to see how long it takes them to melt and which one will melt first. Stay tuned tomorrow to see our findings :)
Check the mail...
Yesterday we sent home our January scholastic book orders. If you are interested, please return by January 16th. Madame also sent home a French book order due the same day. If you are ordering from both (english and french) please write separate cheques. Thanks!

Welcome Back!!
Happy new year!! We hope everyone had a nice and restful holiday! We were right back into our learning today with some great winter activities. We practiced writing letters with our name snowmen, went ice fishing for letters in our new igloo drama centre and learned how 10 frames are great for counting and adding. We also had fun writing winter words in french and playing with an igloo letter match game. See below for some pictures of our day!
